Lesson 7a - Auto Repair Reference Center

1.  I really wanted to do the Popemobile but it wasn't on the list so I did the 2002 Aston Martin Vanquish from Die Another Day.  I did the info search on it and the engine type is V 12.  And 6.0 Liters.  Fuel delivery - FI.  Fuel, gas.  Apparently it has a problem with the throttle pedal assembly.  It becomes displaced.  I have no idea what that is or what the whole thing is about because car language is like Greek to me.

2.  I looked up my own car and I didn't see any recall notices.  But it did have a very long list of "Technical Service Bulletins".  I don't understand what that is but it didn't look like it was bad.  Okay, so I went to the Help button and that showed me where the Maintenance Interval Section was.  But when I put in my car information it didn't have the Maintenance Interval Topic so I put in another car and it still didn't have the right topic button, so then I put in another car - 2000 Ford Escort - and voila, it was there.  I couldn't put in my real mileage because my car is in the shop so I just put in a number.  I punched in 1 million miles and pressed the normal button (I didn't know which button to push so I just chose that one).

This is what it said....

(I just copied and pasted it because it's too complicated.)

If I had extra money, I would spend some to use towards maintenance now that I know that it needs it.  I was better off not knowing.  Ignorance is bliss, and all that.  LOL!

Oh, well.  Maybe after I graduate I can do all that stuff.

Lesson 6 - Mango Languages

1.  No problem there.  It was very easy to make a profile.

2.  I was disappointed that it didn't have a Latin course but I looked at Italian and it seems to be a very nice way to learn a language.  It was easy to follow once you know to push the arrow button on the right.  It also had a translation page but it doesn't tell you how to pronounce it.  It just writes the translation down.  But I did like the flash-card flipping with the audio and that you can go back and forward as much as you need to.  I also liked the cultural hints.  I would definitely tell others about it.  I did a demo on Pimsleur language course before and it seemed to be similar.  I liked both of them.  Buongiorno! was the first word I learned.

Lesson 5 - Oxford Reference Collection

1.  I went to the site and clicked on Browse This Subject then I punched the H button and looked for habeas corpus.  I found 6 dictionaries for this word.  Three of them were Oxford but had varying titles.  So I counted them as separate.

2.  I went back to the first page and clicked Links for This Subject.  There are lots of reasons for these links.  They include all sorts of stuff, not just words and their synonyms but english from different countries, news, rules for writing, culture, radio, etc.  I'm not sure what specific song about nouns that we're looking for but when I looked up nouns I came up with "Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens."

3.  When I tried to get the Visual English Dictionary the page went to Oxford Reference but you have to punch the Visual English Link again to get to the page you want.  There were 10 links but I picked the first example of boats and ships and it gave me the option of 14 types of ships.  I clicked on one of the them out of curiosity and it gave a good illustration of that particular kind of boat.

4.  I had a hard time finding the English Language Reference.  I finally found it on the home page.  Their were 18 different titles on the page.

5.  Under the bilingual page I picked latin-english.  And I punched in habeas corpus.  It didn't have the definition of habeas.  But corpus means body.  So I punched in another one, nil desperandum.  And it gave me the definition but also a list of words that could be similar if I didn't get the word right.  I even misspelled the word and it brought it up anyway.

6.  Awesome!  Under the quotations page you can put in a word and it will list a whole bunch of quotations that have that word in it.  Very nice!

[That] ill deserves the name of confinement which hedges us in only from bogs and precipices. So that, however it may be mistaken, the end of law is, not to abolish or restrain, but to preserve and enlarge freedom.

When I browsed the subject of abolish I got a list of the word and it's meaning and after that it was listed according to the author of the saying and then it listed other sayings that the author said.  This search has much more information and a much broader type of search than just the particular word search.

7.  Under Maps and Illustrations I looked up Syria and it listed several maps.  I clicked on the first one of the three that they had.  The first one was the flag of Syria.  The second was a simple map that showed where it was in the middle east.  (I didn't even know we had a syria anywhere)  Anyway, the third link was another flag.

8.  Under Encyclopedia I looked up Syria.  Under World Encyclopedia it just gave a very brief outline on the country and it's history.  It also had a couple of very small pictures.  The Guide to Countries of the World listed a different type of information about Syria.  It mentioned its export, population, etc. and it had a larger picture and also showed the countries that are situated around it.  It also had a link to further information for tourists.  Actually I think this particular source is more for tourists or someone who was looking up statistics or something.

9.  Under Recycling search, I saw 25 different results.  I'm a little confused on the "three books" we're supposed to find.  On the left of the screen there is a list of 11 types of links under "Refine by Subject" and several hits for each of these.  Forty hits in all.

10.  I'm not sure if I can do it because I don't know anything about web design but I'll give it a go.

Lesson 4b - Additional Education Databases

1.  My first search under Teacher Reference Center gave me 46 results.  When I limited my results to full text and after 2008 I got 8 results.

The APA citation I chose was:

Gordon, D. (2011). REMOTE LEARNING: TECHNOLOGY IN RURAL SCHOOLS. T H E Journal,38(9), 18-24.

All I did was copy and paste.  I hope I did that right.

2.  When I used ERIC I got 297 results.  When I limited these to full text and after 2008 I got 12 results.  Their were several that came up that didn't have PDF or HTML options.  So I clicked on one of the titles.  And under Availability near the bottom their was an url you could click.  But also you can click FULL TEXT under the title on the page before that and you'll get the same result without having to look for "Availability" on the next page.

3.  Under Profesional Development I got 57 results.  After narrowing that down i got 10 results.  And they do overlap!

4.  After clicking all 3 databases I got 384 results.  After narrowing that down I got 21 results.  It seems to me that it would be just quicker just to click all three databases together.  Since they seem to overlap some. On the contrary if you're trying to get a specific audience in mind, you might try the separate database that might help filter out the unnecessary ones.  After all if you punch in all three databases your search is broader it seems.

Lesson 4a - Live Homework Help

Well, I had a little bit of trouble getting to this lesson.  At first I thought that I had to go through the UAA library so I e-mailed them and they said that they would get back to me about it but they never did.  So I thought that I had to sign in and pay a monthly fee to get help.  So I waited some more because I don't have the money for that.  So today, I tried just trying to get in by not signing in like maybe they'll have a free session.  It worked.  I didn't have to sign in or make an account but they just answered my questions and it was very user friendly.

1.  The question I asked was a science question that was just a basically something that I could have just googled so  I was kind of embarrassed but the tutor helped me out no problem.  The question was from the quiz Are you smarter than a 5th grader.  Man, I have no idea how I graduated.  LOL!

2.  The next question was about my resume and it was a real question this time and she helped me out with that and I'm very happy with the results.  All I had to do was save my resume as a pdf file, then the site let me upload it so the tutor could see it as well.

What a great site!
